All the advantages that two year colleges are famous for...
- Ease of acceptance (Junior/Community colleges have an "open door" policy and do not require specific grade point averages or SAT scores.)
- Cheaper tuition (It will cost $88 per credit at any of Hawai’i's community colleges next year as opposed to $213 per credit at UH Hilo and $316 at UH Manoa.
- Smaller classes.
- More interaction with instructors.
- A less potentially overwhelming experience for beginning post-high school students.
- The ability to easily qualify to transfer to a four year college if one so desires.
HCC should be on every student's list of colleges that they will be applying to! And Hawai'i Community College has the made the application process easier than ever!
Representatives from HCC come to Hilo High every October to present information to the students about what they have to offer and they will be bringing the Kama'aina Applications! This is a one page application! Students will need to know their social security number, address, phone number and have some idea of what program they would like to attend. That's it! Later, applicants will receive an acceptance letter! Could starting college be any easier?
The main decision that students must make when they decide to go to HCC what program they will take. The main question is, do they want to attend HCC for a year or two and then transfer to a four year college earn a Bachelor's Degree? Or do they want to take a trade skills program which usually lasts two years and then go out and work?
If the desire is to earn a four year degree, the "Liberal Studies" is probably the best program. This will allow students to earn their general education requirements that most four year degrees require before they transfer to the four year college where they will take their "Major" coursework.
If the desire is to learn job skills which can help one become employable in the shortest amount of time, then the two year trade skills programs are probably the best.
Either way, to complete the Kama'aina Application, students will need to write their desired program. It's OK if students aren't too sure. They will have the opportunity to change their major later when they meet with an HCC counselor.
Now, if you have completed your Kama'aina Application and received your acceptance letter, you will be instructed to do the following:

Below is a table I put together quickly to highlight some of HCC's programs back when their site was a little less appealing. I didn't get all the programs which HCC has but it was a start. I'm leaving it up and may add to it when time allows, but just remember that the pictured programs below are not all of the programs that HCC offers. Also, remember that the State of Hawai'i has other community colleges with different programs which are not offered at HCC. Check out the other community colleges as well!
Here's are some of the popular programs to be found at HCC (click the link to go the program's site):
We are very lucky to have both a community college and a university in our fair city!
