University of Hawaii at Hilo Upward Bound Program
* Upward Bound is a federally funded program that prepares high school students to enter and succeed in college. Throughout the year, students receive instruction and encouragement to develop their academic and personal skills. Students also receive help developing their college and career plans and participate in exciting cultural activities and experiences. During the summer, qualified students can life, five or six weeks, and learn on the University of Hawaii at Hilo Campus.
* Qualifications-Students must: be a U.S. citizen, national permanent resident of the U.S., show the potential and motivation to be successful in education beyond high school, be of low income according to guidelines established by the federal government, student's parents must not have earned a recognized bachelor's degree.
* Please see Mr Carpenter for a "Pre-application" to determine if you are eligible for the Upward Bound Program.
Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps Summer Program
* Hands-on experience aimed at educating Hawaii's youth on the many conservation issues that threaten Hawaii's unique environment.
* An opportunity to work alongside premiere conservations.
* HYCC members have been part of the difference by participating in a wide variety of conservation activities, including: trail management and erosion control, restoring rare and endangered native plants to the wild, eradicating non-native, invasive species, studying human impacts on all aspects of all our ecosystems, learning from government officials how legislative process impacts conservation land and ocean resources, learning about Hawaii's cultural relationship to the environment.
* Applications are due February 28, 2011. Applications are available either online or with Mr. Carpenter.
The Kohala Center
The Kohala Center offers a number of residential engineering and environmental science programs for high school students. Please see the Kohala Center website for additional information and application forms.

Re: Hawaii Future Physicians Symposium and Scholarship

EyeSight Hawaii Vision Institute
Past opportunities which may become available again at about the same time of year this year.
The summer intership program welcomes high school juniors to experience and enjoy a higher level of learning through participation in ongoing engineering research projects. A faculty mentor and graduate students or researchers will be assigned to each intern to ensure a productive and fulfilling experience. At the closure of the intership program, all participating interns are required to participate in an event to showcase to faculty members, student mentors. parents, teachers, counselors and fellow interns what they have achieved and the knowledge they have gained.
The application and all required documents must be postmarked no later than Friday, March 12, 2010. Applications received with a postmark later than the given date will automatically be rejected.
